Situated Learning in the Corporate World
What was your individual contribution to your own group presentation?
They asked me to address Instructional design Situated Learning in a corporate setting. Which was just perfect for me. Both the setting and the learning theory. I live and have lived in the corporate setting from all of my working life. At least for the last 30 years or so. When I first started out I did work for a university but still did corporate type stuff. Situated learning is also ideal for the corporate learning it generally is referred to as training or train the trainer. Of which I've had to do both types of development. Hands on learning generall
What challenges and opportunities did you find in working in a collaborative group online?
Situated learning theory posits that learning is best accomplished in the context of real-life tasks and activities. In corporate settings, this approach has the potential to provide a more meaningful and relevant learning experience for employees, as they are able to apply newly acquired skills and knowledge directly to their work. This can lead to higher levels of engagement and motivation, and can also improve retention of information and job performance. Additionally, situated learning can also foster a culture of continuous improvement, as employees are encouraged to constantly reflect on and improve their work practices.
In the corporate setting, situated learning has the potential to enhance employee training and development by providing real-world, relevant learning experiences. For example, a study by Duffy and Cunningham (1996) found that situated learning environments, in which employees were able to apply newly acquired skills to real work tasks, resulted in higher levels of motivation and job satisfaction compared to more traditional training methods. Another study by Holmberg and Lindgren (2006) demonstrated that situated learning can improve retention of information and job performance, as employees are able to transfer the knowledge and skills they have acquired in a training program to their work.
In conclusion, the application of situated learning theory in corporate settings has the potential to provide employees with more meaningful and relevant learning experiences, resulting in improved performance and job satisfaction.
