LDT 501 M5 Web Site - ChatGPT analysis
In-depth Explanation
Produced by OpenAI, ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot that has the ability to answer questions, and write a variety of documents, stories, songs, and more in a relatively informal, almost human discourse. ChatGPT can write an entire essay based on a prompt, help troubleshoot errors in coding, and write lesson plans. The potential uses and applications seem like a dream come true for some and a nightmare in academic integrity for others, but we are getting a little ahead of ourselves. Chatbots, in general, are nothing new and a common feature of many industries and disciplines. ChatGPT is a chatbot in the sense that it is an online tool programmed to imitate human conversations with users and used in a variety of businesses to assist customers with common concerns or questions (e.g., FAQs). Like other chatbots, ChatGPT is dependent on information provided by the user, so the complexity level of what ChatGPT can produce often depends on the user and what information is available online. Where ChatGPT differs from other Chatbots is the GPT-3 machine learning model that powers it to produce more sophisticated, refined interactions with users. The ChatGPT neural machine learning model has a greater prowess over human language, translations, encapsulating, and creating new text that sounds more authentic and less scripted. Does that replace the need to write essays, reports, songs, poems, lessons, news articles, and more (ED TECH, 2022)? Not quite, but again, we are getting ahead of ourselves, again, but this does begin to address why we chose this innovative learning technology.
Why We Chose ChatGPT and the Potential of this Innovative Technology
ChatGPT has been in the news often lately, and we were inspired to choose this for its relevance and applications. Much in the same way, cellular and smartphones were met with bans in K-12 and higher education settings, educators and administrators are considering how to manage the potential consequences of student use of ChatGPT on academic integrity and learning. A recent Los Angeles Times Op-Ed said it perfectly, "Will chatbots that can generate sophisticated prose destroy education as we know it? We hope so" (Duckworth & Ungar, 2023). Innovative technologies, like artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and easy access to high-speed Internet, are the nails in the coffin of industrial-age notions of education. ChatGPT, while very sophisticated, can't replace critical thinking and metacognition which is, at least for now, a uniquely human trait. It can be used as a tool in a variety of settings to improve learning and performance, and we should find ways to have ChatGPT complement our current endeavors rather than exercising the futility of banning or policing its use.
Relevant connections to text and/or related research?
Let's ask ChatGPT what it thinks are the Relevant connections to itself. Because it's an openai technology based upon a human type modeling language it will be interesting to see how it quotes itself
"What are ChatGPT Relevant connections to text and/or related research with citations in APA format"
Guess it's really saying ChatGPT is just a application, and we'll have to dig deeper.
ChatGPT in Academic Research: According to Aljanabi, Ghazi, Ali, and Abed: Academic research and writing are great places for ChatGPT to shine. It's pretty easy to have it summarize a paper or provide bullet points and citations, saving the researcher time and effort. They also use it to proofread their documents for grammar, style, and coherence. Another thing they note is "it is an effective tool for teaching and learning. For instance, it can assist students in understanding and summarizing difficult texts, and can also generate prompts for writing assignments" One of the key points they make is my comment to Garbage in Garbage out. If the student doesn't understand what they are asking and can fact-check the response the answer ChatGPT might not be correct.
ChatGPT in Social Media: Think this one is a stretch, but I've seen it used in Reference to Marketing analysis of trends in Social Media. Ajanabi, Ghazi, Ali, and Abed (2023) refer to ChatGPT in Social Media, and Tanner (2023) refers to it as the new social media secret weapon.
ChatGPT for document Review: Don't have time to read a document? Have ChatGPT review and summarize it for you! I pretty closely associate this with the academic research above and it also ties in with Student learning. Personally, we have used it in this fashion to review multiple documents faster than if we had to read through all of them. Reading word for word is so 2022.
ChatGPT in Academic Performance: According to Dr. Muneer M. Alshater, " Another potential use of ChatGPT is the analysis of large datasets. When trained to analyze and interpret data, ChatGPT can identify trends and patterns that may not be immediately apparent to humans." Again part of the research.
Explicit connections to uses of the innovation in a learning environment.
Let's see how ChatGPT answers the question
"What are ChatGPT Explicit connections to uses of the innovation in a learning environment. with Citations in APA Format"
We think it kind of missed the Mark on this question. Garbage in gives you Garbage out. Not that the question was wrong. ChatGPT read it wrong just like any computer would. It assumed incorrectly that I was asking about the underlying technology and not the ChatGPT application itself.
Connections of ChatGPT to Learning: Research is the huge one. Having ChatGPT or something similar like Bard from Google or Bing AI-enabled Search engine allows students to quickly research a topic and get summary information and citations without even seeing a card catalog. I've been out of the academic library for so long. I'm not even sure if they have a card catalog any longer. We used to have to go to the library, and I generally had to bug the librarian to point me to the best spot to find the drawer that listed the books I was interested in, take that information down to have it direct me to the right row shelf and book that I was looking to read. I'm not sure many of today's students have had the pleasure of using a card catalog. Not knowing or painfully using a Card Catalog is probably a good thing. Regardless, it is about finding what you need to read. ChatGPT has made that even easier.
In a university in South Florida, one faculty member embraces the use of ChatGPT for his programming class. The course starts by having the students install ChatGPT, have a discussion or class debate on ethics, and then students can use it for the remainder of the class. However, the instructor will have the student submit original codes and will require several reiterations, including building several object-oriented modular codes embedded in the original code. The student will be engaged with the final product and end up with a complete project. In this scenario, ChatGPT coding will still have to be cleaned up to provide an error-free output giving the students a good understanding of basic programming and logic.
Cheating / Plagiarism. Well, this could be a very contentious subject. We are going to mention a few ways to see if somebody has tried to use ChatGPT for writing an essay or nefariously use ChatGPT. GPTZero (Tian, 2023) is one such tool we have used. Simply cut and paste the section of the document you want to test and run the GUI to get a perplexity level of the text. We have compared articles we have written against articles that ChatGPT has written, and it does, to some extent point out the chances of it being computer generated. The Perplexity levels tend to vary to a large degree based upon the author. Originality is another tool that claims "to detect if the content produced by ChatGPT, GPT 3.5 (DaVinci-003), with the same accuracy as it can for GPT-3, which is 94%."
Using ChatGPT in academic settings is largely still being debated. Any search engine will pull up hundreds of articles, both pros and cons, for the use of the application. The jury is still out on this topic, but it is interesting to see the wildly differing opinions on the topic, ranging from blocking the application from the whole state's computer system as it happened in New York to encourage its use as they have in some courses in Florida.
Practical uses of ChatGPT.
Let's see how ChatGPT answers the question
"List ChatGPT ideas and materials for uses in a variety of contexts (classroom, corporate, higher education, etc."
We think the answers are quite modest and potentially, even realistic. Despite the provided answers, one might want to consider actually conversing with a real counselor to receive genuine one-on-one feedback. The human factor should always be one's primary source, aside from generic answers that AI could facilitate.
ChatGPT in various contexts: ChatGPT, like many supporting languages, can support a variety of human tasks or inquiries through the feedback or instruction it provides. Despite ChatGPT's rising popularity, it still possesses many drawbacks that could compromise its position as a learning language. In the case of academia, we find several instances where students use ChatGPT's technology to auto-generate their own assignments, vice taking the initiative to conduct their own research or to put their own thought to paper. Should this be a cause for alarm?
According to Garvey (2023), many academic institutions are welcoming ChatGPT. They use it to help students develop critical thinking skills and study with it as one would with a study group, as a buddy, or as a quiz partner. In addition, Academic staff is exploring ways to use this technology to aid in developing lesson plans or essay generators that students can use to dissect content.
Lastly, Garvey recommends that children receive early awareness of the practical and ethical ways of using AI technology to get the most out of what platforms, such as ChatGPT and others, offer.
