Purpose / Overview

The purpose of this assignment is to become aware of visual literacy including the ability to effectively understand, use, and create visual images and cues (Braden, 1996). Before creating, you must become adept at interpreting visual messages around you as a user. The purpose of this assignment is to identify and describe the characteristics of an image that was especially effective at helping you organize information in a way that you could remember.

Procedures

Step 1: Search for, Select, and Save Relevant Visual/Image

  • Think of a memorable graphic visual that was particularly effective at conveying relevant information, preferably in your current setting. It might be something work-related or from a content area you teach, but you are free to select from any field. One example might be the Food Pyramid. The image can be digital (found online) or something that exists in a text book. Perhaps you have created your own graphic. Any image is fine, but make sure to cite its source. Save, scan, or take a picture of the image.

Step 2: Reflect

  • Reflect on the elements that make it “sticky” to you. What about the image connects to your ability to create meaning and grasp the content? What makes it memorable? What type of instructional visual is it? Is it a decorative, representative, organizational, interpretive, or transformational visual? How does it fit the criteria? For an overview of instructional visuals, please review this presentation.

Step 3: Write

  • In a Word document, include your visual/image, being sure to document its source. Then, write up to 1-2 page, double spaced narrative that includes your reflection and your rationale for selecting it. Be sure to connect to relevant concepts from our text/readings/videos from this week. The following prompts should guide your response:
    • What makes the image "sticky" for you?
    • How does it maintain your visual interest?
    • How does the image improve your comprehension while not becoming overwhelming?
    • Does the image implement story in any way to improve understanding?
    • How might the image be used in an educational setting/environment to enhance learning?
    • How does the image connect to related concepts from this week's reading and/or video?
