LDT503-U6 Final Project
THIS IS A DRAFT!!!!
Web Design Portfolio
Purpose/Overview
Design is an important element to communicating effectively, especially when it comes to having a web presence and connecting with future employers or other stakeholders. Web design is a critical area in the modern era. Using what you have learned about visual literacy, this assignment is a hands-on practical way for you to apply your understanding. It is meant to familiarize you with creating content for the web in a professional manner, and will also allow you to keep a digital record of the work you have completed in the program thus far. For this culminating assignment, you are asked to create a professional website that showcases your work in the learning design/educational technology field.
Two checkpoints have been added to the course as an opportunity to stay on track and receive feedback. The first checkpoint is in Unit 2 and the second is in Unit 4.
Procedures
Step 1: Storyboard
To begin crafting your website you will need to storyboard the content of each section (see guidelines below). Make sure to consider your purpose and audience. The design and content of your website will be up to you, but you will need to consider issues of web design and conventions followed by web designers, including the web design/accessibility principles we learned about in Unit 2. You also need to consider that this is an academic assignment, and the content that you include should be appropriate for that purpose.
- Purpose: The purpose of your website should be to showcase your professional skills in an effective manner using design principles we have explored.
- Audience: Your intended audience is potential future/current employers as well as professional colleagues and the general public (since your site will need to be accessible via the web.
Guidelines for your website:
-
- Include a biographical description of yourself and your work.
- Include your resume/CV.
- Links to at 3-5 artifacts from your coursework in the program thus far (it can be work from our course) with short descriptions of why the examples you selected were included.
- Use effective visuals/multimedia to interest your audience.
- Make sure each of your pages takes design principles into consideration, including CARP, color, typology, etc.
- Provide a copyright and fair use statement.
- Correct and appropriate grammar, punctuation, and language usage.
- Ensure that all links and media function.
Step 2: Review Web-Authoring Options
Once you have laid out the material you want to include, explore possible web design tools that would best present your content. Some possibilities include:
- Links to an external site. – A more basic, but very easy to use tool that has the familiarity of Google tools. With the new Google Sites, building a professional websites is easy by dragging content where you need it.
Considerations:
-
- Other web-based editing tools are acceptable as well, as long as you are capable of using them and can host your website so that it can be accessed online. Please note – it is fine to use provided templates and authoring tools. You do not need to know or use HTML coding unless you want to customize a particular element and/or feel comfortable doing so.
- If you have an existing professional site, you can add this assignment as a section to it, or you may take the opportunity to create a new site specifically for this assignment. Either avenue is acceptable.
- You do not need to sign up for paid versions of any authoring tool to successfully complete this assignment (unless you want to for some reason). Free versions will accomplish the task.
Step 3: Create your Professional Site
- Once you have selected a particular web authoring tool, create your professional site to include the elements described above under “Guidelines for your website.”
- Be sure to use appropriate design elements to make your site visually appealing, drawing your audience in, and making them want to learn more about you/your work.
- Be sure to keep a professional tone to all content. This includes using appropriate visuals, grammar, punctuation, and language use.
Step 4: Write a Narrative to Describe your Site
To submit your work for this assignment, create a Word document that includes your active URL (double check to make sure that your link works appropriately, as broken links cannot be graded and will not receive credit). You will also include a brief reflection on the following questions (not to exceed 1 double spaced page):
- What was the biggest design challenge in creating your website? How did you address/overcome it?
- How has your learning about design influenced the decisions you made in creating your website?
- How might you be able to use your professional website in the future?
