"Why Blooms may not be the best Approach."
Considering the first reason that Lori Gracey brought up in her post about "Why it may be time to dump Bloom's Taxonomy". I would have to disagree. she states: " Thinking does not operate within hierarchies" I'm not sure I completely agree. Her brain, may not function in this fashion, however I'm not sure that my brain operates in that fashion she describes. "All of these "levels" happen simultaneously" I know many engineers that have spent years training the way they think in order, for a logical chronological order, which flows to the way they think. Going back to unit one and thinking about Katharine Briggs and Isabela Myers and how they described the personalities of learning I'm sure they would agree with me is stating that many minds behave in different fashions. The creativity that somebody has changes the way that they "think" about things. according to Briggs an Myers
Considering the Second reason Lori Gracey brought up on relying on Bloom's list is regarding it's creation before rigorous research. She brings up some good points, but, I feel she misses the point of Bloom's list entirely. The way I read Bloom's list is as a framework and not a method of how the brain solves a problem. Bloom's list is more of a methodology for creating the instructional materials; it is not trying to solve the way that lessons should be taught.
Considering the third reason that Lori Gracey brings up, that it's not Leaner centric. Again, I think she is missing the point entirely. From my readings and conversations about Bloom's list, again I see it as a framework. Bloom's list is not specific for teacher-centered nor student-centered. It's just a method for building modules and ways to generate the topics and material for the course. The revised version of Blooms taxonomy considers a different approach to hierarchical model and suggest for combined order, i.e. cognitive and analytic approach. This may be what Lori Gracey is alluding to with her article.
Personally, I agree to disagree and Lori is just trying to get a rise out of people, which perhaps is a good thing to make people think about the tools that they are using before blindly moving forward. If her topic is just to make people think about what is learner-specific. I think she is spot on with some elements of Blooms Taxonomy. If she is truly trying to say that Bloom's list is bad then she is way off on her analysis. It's a tool and a guideline, not a procedure to strictly follow. There lies the difference in her Paper.
