EDT 540 Unit 2 Discussion Response
In lieu of removing recess time or taking it away in general, if the behavior does not improve, what are ways teachers can give punishments to students in ways it won't harm their developmental progress at school?
That is a great question, but I grew up in the era, when our shop teacher had a 4 foot paddle with holes drilled in it. The punishment was to grab hold of your ankles and wait for the requisite number of whacks. I remember regularly grabbing my ankles in line to wait for my punishment. Mom and Dad didn't have the fancy paddle, but mom tended more towards the pancake spatula and dad the willow branch. I think I turned out okay. But it's probably one of the reasons I'm not a teacher. I don't see any harm in warming up the rear of a miscreant younger student. "Spare the Rod and spoil the Child."
As this application focuses on behavioral modification as a whole, how would you go about implementing individual reinforcements without involving the whole class? Would it only be individual punishments for students or would individual rewards be given as well?
That is a great question and one the wife and I have discussed in length. I was torn to write what I did about punishment for the whole class. I see peer pressure or conformity applied by a group as a great tool. I actually feel like this is a great research question. one I don't believe is addressed in any scholarly article I can find. I found things about Environmental, Political, Economical, Theological conformity but really nothing about rewards and punishment for a group. I think back to my childhood and remember the times a teacher rewarded the class. I know in particular that I probably wasn't deserving of the reward, but took it anyway. Singling out students in the middle of a class to reward or punish them probably isn't the best way, unless you are trying to push peer-pressure. It's going to shame them regardless of its punishment or reward. I think that's a great question and needs a better answer, but I haven't a clue how to answer it.
What is one thing you would have done differently about it?
It is a great topic, that needs to be addressed. I think you did a great job. But as I said I came from a different generation. I still believe in corporal punishment. I feel a good spanking should be applied in liberal amounts and is sadly lacking in today's education.
