How would you design instructional materials to be used for as a data collection tool to enable continuous improvement as a normal part of your design process?
Designing instructional materials that can be used as a data collection tool can be possible by using adaptive learning and interactive technologies that allows you to capture immediate data for analysis. In one study on the student experiences, researchers linked learning outcomes with that of student’s skills development and student satisfaction; this research had a positive implication in the development of online courses in a business program (Rossin, Ro, & Klein, 2009). Monitoring and managing learning outcomes can provide useful data analytics to ensure that learning objectives are being met.
Using adaptive learning technologies can help identify areas where learners are having difficulties with and can provide immediate assistance or alternative learning materials to further support learning outcomes. Adaptive learning is defined as “the delivery of custom learning experiences that address the unique needs of an individual through just-in-time feedback, pathways, and resources” (Smartsparrow, n.d.).

Why is continuous improvement, and designing instruction with the ongoing care and feeding of that instruction in mind important?
It is critical to monitor and manage learning materials to ensure that learning outcomes are being met and that instructional materials are current, effective, and not stale. Instructional materials should keep learners engaged and well aligned with the course objectives and/or learning outcomes; instructional materials that are stale and irrelevant can demotivate learners. There are multiple ways to distribute learning materials such as video lectures, films, digital media. This makes it challenging to keep updated. Instructional designers should keep materials current by using versioning for sustainability and maintenance.
