What will a LMS look like in 2032?
Many aspects of the Learning Management Systems that I have experienced over the last couple years feel really clunky. I've installed a couple LMS's for a smaller school and for my wife to practice different aspects of her job as an instructional designer at Northern Arizona State University. Specifically Moodle because it's largely free. However Moodle doesn't come with many of the pre-installed modules or pre-programed sections for dealing with different aspects of the LMS. Esentially it's just a large data base with different ways to hook into that database. Storage of the files and data and redistribution of the files and data through a customizable Web interface. Saying that, it still feels clunky.
When I ditched my motorolla pager for my first star-tek phone it was leaps and bounds beyond what I could do with the pager, and my move from the Star-tek to a smart phone. Wow, it was a lot more than I had ever hoped for with a PDA. However LMSs still feel like a front end to a Database. I don't see today's LMS as a huge leap forward from a front end to a database. Or even in 10 years for that matter.
Dreaming about how I'd like to see a Learning management system in 10 years, probably isn't far enough out to give a good feel to what I hope to see in the future. Sure, there are going to be a lot of advances in the next 10 years. Better integration of technologies, better ways of dealing with group projects, better ways of student to student interaction, but it's still built on a customizable interface for a large database. No real large disruption to the technology. We aren't going to go from a pager LMS to a smartphone LMS in 10 years.
I think a better question is what's going to be the next technology disruption? How do we get from the Motorolla paging LMS system we have today to the Smartphone LMS of the future. I think artificial Intelligence is going to play a large part in that advancement. Basically it's just another front end to learning. A front end that can adjust itself to the different requirements thrown at it. Do you have a student that's struggling with a particular topic. The LMS will make a decision to give remedial help on that topic based upon the competencies required for the level the student should be attaining. Reporting back to the designer that the particular leaner needed these additional lessons and has improved his knowledge on that subject. The Learner watched these videos and was able to articulate this knowledge and is now able to proceed with the intended course work that the Instructional designer originally was trying to impart.
This is actually a pretty interesting question for me. I've had the same question myself on the technology that I work with on a daily basis. What's going to be the next big disruption in the telecommunication field? I have a lot of ideas. Going to be fun to find out!
