LDP 540: Final Project Theoretical Application Stage 2 Interconnection of private networks over a public Network

Copley EDT 540: Theoretical Application Assignment Stage 2 Problem Statement: Adult learning students are having problems relating real-world scenarios to lab practice scenarios.  The challenge is to give them a real world scenario that they then have to develop a solution.  This section is regarding strategies and approaches to the interconnection between a branch office and a core office location, as part of an architecture for deploying private networks over a public network. Target Learners: This learning module is for learners who are interested in acquiring additional knowledge on the Interconnection of multi-location branch sites over a public network.  This module could be incorporated into a train the trainer program, that is also open for those working in the industry, and are interested in learning and expanding their knowledge.  This training module is targeted towards those who have already completed courses and have a  basic understanding of ...

LDT 540 Application Stage 1 (Final Project proposal)

EDT 540: Theoretical Application Assignment Proposal   Name: Timothy I Copley Proposed Topic:   Group based development of my application 3. I'd like to further develop this application into a Theoretical Application. Student development of interconnection between two network locations.   Target Learners: Junior / Senior Level College students with comprehensive background in Security, Security Protocols, Routing Protocols and Wireless protocols.   Describe the learning or teaching issues/challenges/gap that your target learners face and that can possibly be addressed by your proposed instructional unit or training module. Many topics in college are taught at an individual level. Students may learn IPSec and how phase 1 and phase 2 operation. They may understand the concepts of different routing protocols and how traffic flows between source and destination. However many problems exist when the students try to combine different technologies to form a business s...

EDP 540 Unit 4 Instructional Problem DHCP using ICAP Framework

Image
Instructional Problem: a description of an instructional challenge. Learners have having a problem understanding the packet flow during the DHCP  (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) process and how this starts the process of allowing computers or devices onto the network. How this can be manipulated, and how this can be observed to troubleshoot problems inside of a computer network.  They also are having problems understanding how different passed parameters from DHCP can alter behavior of the devices joining a network.     Application of Featured Learning Theories/Strategies: a description of how you apply the featured learning theories (ICAP Framework) and/or the instructional strategy (Cooperative Learning and Reciprocal Teaching) to design a learning activity or environment to address the instructional problem you described. Using the ICAP Framework for Constructive mode of learning, the learner should work with a te...

Interesting Discussion I'm leading for Unit 4 EDT 540

Image
I put forth a topic that I'm planning to write a course around at some point, my application.  Interconnection of networks over a public infrastructure.  I think there would be a great demand for this sort of course, I've seen so many implemented poorly.  Today's students in the field need more guidance on this topic.  I took my latest project, one I was working on last week and added a "What if" scenario, and tried to turn it into a project that could be worked on by a group of students. Great feedback Lauren!  She asks how would you help the students who get discouraged, and would there be requirements to sign up for the course that requires this knowledge.  Knowledge requirements should be listed beforehand.  She also suggests that creating groups in a way that spreads more knowledgeable students with less knowledgeable students so they can learn from their peers.   So my first prompt to this comes from our last discussion, ...

Unit 2 Review Windi Bishop. First graders are having problem sounding out words.  Phonemes, causing problems with reading.   Great application, as I read through it I reflected on a similar process my typing class had to go through.  It was the toughest thing in the world to not spell out the word as you type.  The minute we stopped spelling the words and started saying the words as we typed them, our WPM (Words per minute) jumped from 20-30 to 50-60.  Odd how the simple fact of spelling holds you back, but it could have been the manual typewriter as well.  Only a couple people in the class got to use the Brand new electric typewriters. Given the disparity of a typical classroom.  I kept wondering when I read this how it impacted the "Gifted" students.  I'm sure in every classroom you have the students who are above average and those below.  My mother taught 3rd Grade, and I forever will remember her talk about a couple st...

EDT 540 Unit 2 Discussion Response

In lieu of removing recess time or taking it away in general, if the behavior does not improve, what are ways teachers can give punishments to students in ways it won't harm their developmental progress at school?   That is a great question, but I grew up in the era, when our shop teacher had a 4 foot paddle with holes drilled in it.  The punishment was to grab hold of your ankles and wait for the requisite number of whacks.  I remember regularly grabbing my ankles in line to wait for my punishment.  Mom and Dad didn't have the fancy paddle, but mom tended more towards the pancake spatula and dad the willow branch.  I think I turned out okay.  But it's probably one of the reasons I'm not a teacher.  I don't see any harm in warming up the rear of a miscreant younger student.  "Spare the Rod and spoil the Child." As this application focuses on behavioral modification as a whole, how would you go about implementing individua...

EDT 540 Unit 2 using Blooms Taxonomy

Instructional Problem: Students are having problems discerning the difference between an internal routing protocol using a subnet mask to apply bounds around a computer network.  Understanding a mask size can determine the size of the network and allows either more or less computers to communicate within that network.  It really comes down to a binary to decimal conversion to create a size and should really be memorized, in order to be an effective method of designing computer networks.  A network with a mask of /29 is twice the size of /30.  A mask of /28 is twice the size of a /29. Application of featured Learning Theories / Strategies: Converting a /32 into a ipv4 mask is as simple as 4 octets of 255.  or 2^8 4 times. Using Information Processing Sensory registers to acknowledge the size of the network.    Network sizes must be placed into Long term memory a Declarative type of knowledge.  Just as a person knows even numbers, ...

Instructional Challenge Many Customers do not understand the reasons why it is not a good idea to hide their Wireless SSID (Service Set Identifier).  The challenge is to provide them with an analogy or real world example of how it behaves and why hiding it is not a good idea.  The miss-conception is that hiding it makes it tougher to find and is thus more secure.  When in reality the security is applied with a different mechanism and hiding the network only makes the network perform worse.   Application   A case based scenario would help illuminate the concept of what actually happens when a network is hidden versus how that impacts security.  Have the customer or sales person develop a narrative to engage learners in a discussion to provide examples of what happens when a SSID is hidden versus what happens when a SSID is visible.  Also, explain when security is applied to to the traffic and the job of security and its role in protection o...

EDT 502 Unit 3 Learning Goal Objectives

EDT 502 Unit 3 Learning Goal Objectives   Learning Goal: At the end of this course, the leaner will be able to create a podcast for use on a University's LMS System use-able for a section of a course. Objective 1: Define the podcast you are going to create.  There are a variety of ways in which to define a podcast, a variety of teaching methods to examine and a variety of equipment in which to create the podcast.  The goal of Objective 1 is to plan what you are going to do and how you are going to do it.  It is important to plan out how you are going to create your podcast because when you plan out your goal it allows you to create the idea you are trying to convey, determine if it's realistic and adjust your plan accordingly.  It also allows you to decide the length and amount of information you can put into your lesson as well as the format for the podcast and the equipment necessary. Objective 2: Create a Narrative and properly plan and  script a Podcast...

EDT 502 Unit 6 Discussion Post

EDT 502 Unit 6 What will a LMS look like in 2032? Many aspects of the Learning Management Systems that I have experienced over the last couple years feel really clunky.  I've installed a couple LMS's for a smaller school and for my wife to practice different aspects of her job as an instructional designer at Northern Arizona State University.  Specifically Moodle because it's largely free.  However Moodle doesn't come with many of the pre-installed modules or pre-programed sections for dealing with different aspects of the LMS.  Esentially it's just a large data base with different ways to hook into that database.  Storage of the files and data and redistribution of the files and data through a customizable Web interface.  Saying that, it still feels clunky.  When I ditched my motorolla pager for my first star-tek phone it was leaps and bounds beyond what I could do with the pager, and my move from the Star-tek to a smart phone. ...

EDT 502 Unit 5 Discussion Post

EDT 502 Unit 5 I think Rea's Conversation style in the video was effective in delivery.  You could tell the videographer was very professional, from his transitions to effective use of fades and synchronize between video and audio. Although the monotone of Rea was a little hard to get into what he was presenting, he actually had quite a bit of dry humor in his monologue, which was funny when you took a minute to process what he was saying.  The content wasn't really speaking to me, having been a cook for many years, and today, I actually just got back from Greece where I had Chicken gyro / Tzatziki sauce nearly every day. Although I think most people that are not familiar with preparing Mediterranean food would perhaps have a different perspective.  His media presentation was excellent.  Speeding things up, slowing things down and making the flow of the video and audio fit what he was trying to teach, he had very good editing and control of his med...

EDT 502 Unit 4 How would you design instructional materials to be used for as a data collection tool to enable continuous improvement as a normal part of your design process? Designing instructional materials that can be used as a data collection tool can be possible by using adaptive learning and interactive technologies that allows you to capture immediate data for analysis.  In one study on the student experiences, researchers linked learning outcomes with that of student’s skills development and student satisfaction; this research had a positive implication in the development of online courses in a business program (Rossin, Ro, & Klein, 2009).  Monitoring and managing learning outcomes can provide useful data analytics to ensure that learning objectives are being met.  Using adaptive learning technologies can help identify areas where learners are having difficulties with and can provide immediate assistance or alternative learning materials t...

Considering the first reason that Lori Gracey brought up in her post about "Why it may be time to dump Bloom's Taxonomy".  I would have to disagree.  she states: " Thinking does not operate within hierarchies"  I'm not sure I completely agree.  Her brain, may not function in this fashion, however I'm not sure that my brain operates in that fashion she describes.  "All of these "levels" happen simultaneously"  I know many engineers that have spent years training the way they think in order, for a logical chronological order, which flows to the way they think.  Going back to unit one and thinking about Katharine Briggs and Isabela Myers and how they described the personali...

EDT 502 Unit 2 Discussion Post

EDT 502 Unit 2 Overview: So, I have a couple things to say about Spacely Sprockets and George "Jetson" having had previous experience with this bunch of Misfits, and although Cogswell's Cogs is a serious Competitor.  Spacely Sprockets is trying to compete and it looks like they have shortened their development cycle in such a way that they haven't had time to train their staff in the new product development cycle.  First off the Product Manager or the Program Manager should be ashamed of themselves for not including a training cycle in the project plan. Secondly although I hate to say anything bad about any employee who works inside of the same company, namely Spacely Sprockets, but George's Son Elroy really should be the individual running the training and the help desk.  His aptitude for technology far exceeds most of the current Staff at our company. There are many resources available through Rosie's training Program which should have been co...

EDT 502 Unit 1 Discussion Post

EDT 502 Unit 1 Given that my knowledge about the Origins and evaluation of instructional design is not all that great other than the Readings this week on Rober A. Reiser. I would have to admit that my impressions of the Recommended readings were negative.  The thing that struck me the most was how outdated it was as a reference written in around 1996 and referring to subjects and topics in Media from 1910 to 1980.With a couple minor additions to bring it "Somewhat Current". However, in the last 20 years or so since it was written I've seen so many advances in Technology, so many advances I had hoped had occurred in the educational field.  That's what I'm hoping to see in the following courses.  Knowing History is good, but standing on the shoulders of Giants is better.  If there haven't been many advances in the last 20 years we are doomed.  As for his sojourner into instructional Design it was a little more interesting, perhaps because...

EDT 502 Unit 7 Evaluation of the instruction for the University of Skaro on how to create a podcast.

Evaluation of the instruction for the University of Skaro on how to create a podcast.    This  project was on a very interesting topic.  Creating a lesson for a group of "Champion"  Students that are really thought experts in their field.  On the one hand we had to assume they were the expert on their subject while showing them a remedial subject and "teaching" them how to present their work.  It was a really complex scenario and I'm not sure we did a very good job.   I had some objections to the way our group went about the whole process.  I realize in a group that we have to come to some sort of consensus in order to move forward.  However several of the other students in my group were strong minded and very motivated.  I had objectives and ways I wanted to work on in the project and they had ways they wanted to work on the project, and they really didn't always align.  I guess that is true of real life and work life a...

WOL My Goals as a Learning Designer

A short-term goal that can be achieved by the end of the course.   My short-term goal for this course is to Develop an understanding of Canvas and the methods for developing course work using many different types of media for online learning.   All of these innovative technologies are new to me; I've never taken an online course at a university.   I've taken online courses for different vendor certifications, which are somewhat similar and perhaps some of the teachers in this class have had a hand in developing the theory behind these classes.   While most of it is good, I've seen some bad learning portals or online courses that are not effective or efficient. I'd like to leave this course comfortable with the process of taking a course in this fashion and learn some of the ins and outs of how it operates; how to integrate the "media" with the instruction and how to help a student get engaged.   Even though it appears to be different ways o...
